Why Liberty Training Can Feel Lonely – and How to Beat It

September 16, 20253 min read

If you’ve ever tried liberty training, you’ll know it’s not like dressage or show jumping. In those worlds, you can usually find:

  • A local instructor who comes out once a week

  • A riding club offering affordable group lessons

  • Friends to train with for that all-important social buzz

  • Local shows to give you focus and motivation

That combination makes it much easier to stay on track. Even when it’s raining, you think: “Well, I’ve got a lesson in two weeks, so I’d better put in the work.”

Liberty training, on the other hand, is still a niche. There aren’t riding clubs full of liberty enthusiasts, and you’re unlikely to stumble across a local trainer unless you’re very lucky. And even then, hands-on tuition tends to be expensive because there are so few specialists, and the best trainers are often busy working their own horses rather than teaching.

So the reality is… most of us are left training at home, on our own. And that can feel lonely.

The Challenges of Going It Alone

  • Motivation: Without a clear goal or upcoming lesson, it’s easy to let days (or weeks!) slip by.

  • Inspiration: You’re constantly working with the same horse, in the same place, with no fresh ideas to keep things exciting.

  • Accountability: Nobody is checking in to see if you’ve trained – which can make it hard to push through the dips.

  • Isolation: Liberty training is beautiful, but without a community, it can feel like you’re doing it all in a vacuum.

Why Online Learning Can Be Even Better

Here’s the good news: online training doesn’t just fill the gap – in many ways, it actually gives you more.

  1. Replay, Don’t Forget
In an in-person lesson, you walk away and forget 80% of what was said (if you're anything like me!!) Online, you can re-watch videos again and again. That means you can use our WTF method – Watch, Try, Fine-Tune – and actually put things into practice step by step.

  2. Self-Analysis with Video
Just 10 minutes of filming yourself can be a game-changer. Rewatch, check your body language, look at your horse’s responses, and compare them against the Progress Awards criteria. You’ll start spotting things you never would have noticed in the moment.

  3. A Structured Path
When I used to ride dressage, climbing up through the levels gave me structure and focus. That’s why we created the Liberty Horse UK Progress Awards – a clear roadmap from beginner to advanced. You can set your sights on the next level every three months, just like Susie, who went from complete beginner to Level 10 in just two and a half years!

  4. Feedback Without Travel
Our online shows give you something to aim for every quarter – plus feedback from experienced judges. No travelling, no stress, just film at home and submit.

Recreating the Social Side

At Liberty Horse UK, community is at the heart of what we do. Our Silver and Gold members join fortnightly coaching calls where we:

  • Share training videos

  • Troubleshoot challenges together

  • Set and review goals

  • Cheer each other on

It’s a space where you’re never training alone – even if you’re the only liberty trainer in your county.

Beating the Loneliness of Liberty Training

Liberty training doesn’t need to feel isolating. With the right structure, support, and community, you can:

  • Stay motivated even when the weather (or life) gets in the way

  • Keep inspired with fresh ideas and feedback

  • Progress step by step through the levels

  • Find your tribe of like-minded liberty enthusiasts

That’s what we’re building every day inside Liberty Horse UK – a place where you don’t just train your horse, you grow, connect, and keep moving forward.

So if you’ve been struggling to stay motivated at home, remember: you don’t need to do it alone.
